Introduction

There are some journeys that stay with you forever, not because they are luxurious or easy, but because they touch your soul in unexpected ways. My trip to Poon Hill was one of those unforgettable adventures. Nestled in the beautiful Annapurna region of Nepal, Poon Hill is famous for its breathtaking sunrise views over the Himalayan mountains. Before the trek, I had seen countless photographs of golden peaks glowing under the morning sun, but nothing prepared me for experiencing it in real life.

The trek to Poon Hill is considered one of the best short treks in Nepal. It is suitable for beginners, families, photographers, and anyone who wants to experience the beauty of the Himalayas without walking for weeks. During the journey, I passed through charming Gurung and Magar villages, walked through rhododendron forests, crossed suspension bridges, and met travelers from around the world.

This journey taught me that trekking is not only about reaching a destination. It is about the people you meet, the quiet moments in nature, and the memories created along the trail.

Beginning the Journey from Pokhara

My adventure started from Pokhara, one of the most beautiful cities in Nepal. Pokhara itself feels magical with its peaceful lakes, mountain views, and relaxed atmosphere.

Early in the morning, I boarded a jeep heading toward Nayapul, the gateway to the Poon Hill trek. The road followed rivers, terraced hills, and small villages. As the city slowly disappeared behind us, I could already feel the excitement growing inside me.

The air became fresher, the mountains looked closer, and the entire landscape transformed into a peaceful Himalayan countryside. After a few hours of driving, we reached Nayapul and officially started walking.

First Day: Trekking Through Villages and Forests

The first day of trekking was both exciting and challenging. The trail passed through beautiful villages like Tikhedhunga and small settlements filled with stone houses and smiling locals.

Children waved at trekkers and greeted everyone with cheerful “Namaste.” Women worked in the fields while elderly villagers sat outside their homes enjoying the mountain sunshine.

One thing I quickly realized was that the trek involved many stone staircases. Thousands of stone steps climbed steeply uphill toward Ulleri village. At first, I felt energetic and confident, but after several hours my legs started burning. Every turn looked like the last staircase, but another set always appeared ahead.

Despite the exhaustion, the scenery made every step worthwhile. Waterfalls flowed beside the trail, colorful prayer flags fluttered in the wind, and forests created cool shade along the path.

That evening, I stayed at a teahouse in Ulleri. The simple warmth of the guesthouse felt comforting after a long day. Sitting near the fire, drinking hot tea, and listening to stories from fellow trekkers became one of my favorite moments of the trip.

Life Inside the Himalayan Teahouses

One of the most memorable parts of the Poon Hill trek was staying in traditional Himalayan teahouses. These lodges are simple but full of warmth and hospitality.

The rooms were basic with wooden beds and blankets, but after walking all day they felt perfect. Most evenings were spent around the dining room fire where trekkers shared stories, laughed together, and discussed the next day’s trail.

The food was surprisingly delicious. Dal Bhat, Nepal’s traditional meal of rice, lentils, vegetables, and pickles, became my daily source of energy. There is even a famous trekking saying in Nepal:

“Dal Bhat power, 24 hour!”

I also enjoyed hot noodle soup, Tibetan bread, fried rice, pancakes, and milk tea during the trek. Electricity and internet were limited in some places, but honestly, disconnecting from technology made the journey even more meaningful. Instead of staring at screens, people talked to each other, admired the mountains, and enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere.

Walking Through Rhododendron Forests

The next morning, the trail led deeper into rhododendron forests. Since I trekked during spring, many flowers were blooming beautifully.

The forest looked magical. Red, pink, and white rhododendrons covered the hillsides like natural gardens. Birds sang in the trees while sunlight filtered softly through the branches. At times, clouds moved through the forest creating a dreamy atmosphere. The silence felt calming and spiritual. I remember stopping several times just to breathe deeply and appreciate the beauty surrounding me.

Along the trail, I met local mule caravans carrying supplies to mountain villages. Their bells echoed through the forest, adding another special sound to the trekking experience.

Ghorepani: The Gateway to Poon Hill

Eventually, I reached Ghorepani, the final stop before hiking to Poon Hill. Ghorepani is a lively mountain village surrounded by forests and snow-capped peaks. Trekkers from many different countries gather here before waking up early for the famous sunrise hike.

That evening, everyone seemed excited yet nervous because the sunrise hike begins very early in the morning. I prepared my warm clothes, camera, gloves, and flashlight before sleeping. The night was cold and quiet. Outside, the stars looked incredibly bright above the mountains.

The Magical Sunrise at Poon Hill

At around 4:30 AM, I woke up in darkness. The air was freezing cold, and trekkers slowly gathered with flashlights to begin climbing toward Poon Hill. The trail was steep, and although it was still dark, excitement kept everyone moving forward. After about an hour of uphill walking, I finally reached the viewpoint at Poon Hill View Tower. And then came the moment I will never forget.

As the first sunlight touched the Himalayan peaks, the mountains slowly turned golden. The views of Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, and Dhaulagiri looked absolutely unreal. Everyone became silent for a moment. Some people took photographs while others simply stared at the mountains in amazement.

The cold wind touched my face, but I barely noticed it. I felt grateful, peaceful, and incredibly small compared to the giant Himalayas standing before me. No photograph can truly capture the feeling of watching sunrise from Poon Hill. It is something that must be experienced personally.

Experiencing Local Culture

Another beautiful aspect of the trek was learning about the local Gurung and Magar communities.

The villagers were kind, hardworking, and welcoming. Many families operate teahouses and farms while preserving their traditional lifestyles. I enjoyed hearing local stories about mountain life, festivals, and tourism. Even though life in the mountains can be difficult, the people carried a strong sense of happiness and community. The architecture of the villages was also fascinating. Stone-paved pathways, prayer flags, and traditional homes gave the area a timeless beauty.

Challenges Along the Trek

Although the Poon Hill trek is considered moderate, it still came with challenges. The endless uphill stairs tested my endurance. Some mornings were freezing cold, and carrying a backpack while climbing steep trails became exhausting. At higher elevations, breathing also became slightly more difficult. However, compared to longer Himalayan treks, Poon Hill remains relatively accessible and beginner-friendly.

The key was walking slowly, drinking enough water, and enjoying the journey rather than rushing. Interestingly, the physical difficulty made the experience more rewarding. Every hard climb led to another beautiful view or meaningful moment.

Returning Back with New Memories

After the sunrise at Poon Hill, the return journey felt different. I was tired but emotionally fulfilled. As I walked back through forests and villages, I noticed small details I had missed earlier — the sound of birds, the smell of pine trees, children playing near stone houses, and clouds drifting across the mountains.

The trek reminded me how beautiful simple life can be. When I finally returned to Pokhara, I felt both happy and emotional. Part of me wanted to stay longer in the mountains. That evening beside Phewa Lake, I reflected on the journey while watching the sunset over the water.

The mountains had given me something more valuable than photographs — they gave me peace, confidence, and unforgettable memories.
